Verdura is an elegant, intoxicating marriage of Sicilian heritage, world-class comfort and beguiling views.

Located in an idyllic valley on the south coast of Sicily, surrounded by orange, lemon and olive groves, Sir Rocco Rocco Forte’s gated wellness hotel is the standout resort on Sicily’s south coast. This rambling, minimalist, eco-conscious resort is architecturally designed to blend into the herb and plant-studded terrain. At the hotel’s heart are 45 holes of golf, clay tennis courts, monumental kids’ club, pools, four restaurants and five bars but it’s the Sebastian Kneipp-inspired spa that stands out. Completely wellness oriented, it draws its true gravitas from thalassotherapy pools with views, a huge gym and soulful spa treatments that utilises regional herbs and products. The nearby historic, baroque fishing port of Sciacca is utterly enchanting and also a short distance off, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento is an ancient town founded in 582BC by Greek settlers, and now a Unesco World Heritage site with the remains of eight Greek temples. Wines are exceptional here - not surprising given Sicily is Italy’s second largest producing wine region.

Verdura’s standalone wellness centre is probably the top facility in the whole of Sicily, and well up there among Italy’s leading hotel spas. With no less than four outdoor thalassotherapy pools and a regime following the Kneipp healing and fitness philosophy, based on the five pillars of water, plants, exercise, diet and balance.

Unsurprisingly, dining is an absolute pleasure with four restaurants offering little in the way of repetition. The upscale La Zagara, serves exquisite Mediterranean food; Liolà is a jazzy traditional Sicilian trattoria beneath the Medieval watchtower of Torre Verdura with cliff-top views and wooden-decked Amare beachside restaurant does the finest local seafood. Five bars, including Granita, which is perfect for cocktails.
