Opened in December 2017, Vakkaru is a luxury property that has been built with fastidious care to protect the natural environment. Therefore the interior of the island has extra lush and mature foliage and the extensive house reef is undisturbed, despite quite a number of over water villas.
The land and over water villas are state-of-the-art and beautifully appointed, offering spacious, contemporary, understated luxury. Dining options are excellent; from traditional feet-in-the-sand tables at the main restaurant to the open air Vakku Grill, with dinner under the beach pergolas. All are unpretentious but sublime.
It is possible to walk to the superb house reef via the water villa jetty, near the blue hole. The corals have survived recent bleaching events better than many other reefs so shoals of fish abound, with sharks and eagle rays to be found along the drop off from the dive jetty. Magical.

Its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status means snorkelling and diving should be on the top of every list. There’s a rich house reef, a PADI certified scuba-dive centre and expeditions with the residence marine biologist. A quick 10 minute private speedboat excursion to Turtle Point brings snorkelers close to a multitude of turtles.
