Amanpulo is the sole occupant of remote, reef-fringed Pamalican; a small island that’s part of the Cuyo archipelago in the Sulu Sea. While it feels incredibly remote, a twice-daily flight on the resort’s private 15-seater plane connects it to Manila in just over one hour. Pamalican Island is nearly 100 hectares in size, meaning with just 42 Casitas and 16 villas, privacy and solitude are guaranteed.

For a private island of its size housing so few rooms/villas, there is ample choices for food: Clubhouse puts emphasis on Filipino classics; Nama serves sushi from fish flown in daily from Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market; the Beach Club serves delectable tapas; the Picnic Lounge does beachside pizzas and the Lagoon Club serves grilled specialities. But the real star here is the private barbecues, which can be done outside the casitas. The delightful Kawayan is a floating bamboo bar in the middle of the sea, and a perfect spot for sunset romance.
The hillside Aman Spa, with magnificent sea views from pavilions lined with native wood and capiz decor, offers treatments derived from the traditional healing arts of the Philippines.
Turtle hatching takes place from June to October, when endangered hawksbill and green sea turtles lay their eggs on Amanpulo’s beach at night and marine life in the immediate vicinity include black-tip reef sharks and giant sea turtles.
The playful ‘Jungle Run’ is an obstacle course designed around the centre of the island’s shrubbery and foliage.
There are 42 spacious casitas and 16 bigger villas scattered around the island, linked by a maze of unpaved roads. The casitas are inspired by rural Filipino dwellings and come with high ceilings and twin roofs. The private outdoor wooden decks, hammocks in secluded bowers and pebble-washed walls are just some of the traditional Palawan Island elements included. Huge bathrooms feature twin sinks, freestanding tubs, and walk-in rain showers, with amenities stored in earthenware to reduce plastic waste. All casitas follow the same size and layout, but rates vary depending on their perks: some have direct beach access, while others sport private plunge pools or dazzling sea views. Each comes with a golf cart to navigate the island.
